As you have learned so far, there are standards of practice for AT service delivery as seen in the QIAT. As a part of best practice, schools are charged with developing procedures for Professional Development and Training in AT so that all educators, related service providers, and administrators can receive quality AT professional development. This lesson will review promising practice for Professional Development and Training in AT and provide a glimpse of sample operational procedures that can be adopted by schools/districts to consistently provide quality Professional Development and Training in AT for all those who need it.
To complete the activity:
You will first want to check the following link to see if operational procedures have been developed and submitted to ABLE Tech because someone could have created them for you! The link is to the Helpful Resources Page on this website.
If you determine that your school/district does not already have operational procedures, proceed in one of the following ways:
- Option 1: Check to see if your school/district has an AT Support Team with Oklahoma ABLE Tech by clicking on the following link: Helpful Resources Page. These people may be able to help you either access existing operational procedures or draft new ones. If a team exists, you will want to ask your building principal, Special Education Director or other administrator in charge of special education services, or Superintendent to determine who the team members are.
- Option 2: Gather a team. If no team exists, or you are unable to determine who the team members are, consider gathering other regular/special educators and related services providers who may be interested in assistive technology, and each go through this curriculum – working together on all of the following courses – including this lesson/activity that requires you to access/create operational procedures.
- Start by reviewing pages 98-99 of the AT TA Guide (embedded below) to access Promising Practices & Sample Operational Procedures for Professional Development and Training in AT. Once your team has reviewed these pages, draft operational procedures for Professional Development and Training and upload them.
